Abstract: The technical features of instruments used to assess wood defects are described and opinions are expressed on their reliability, ease of use, and interpretation. The instruments include penetrometers, electrical conductivity meters, sonic and ultrasonic detectors, thermography, radar, and X-ray tomography.
